Periodontal (Gum) Disease Treatment

Healthy Gums for a Healthy Smile

The health of your gums not only matters for your teeth but the rest of your body as well. If they develop a common infection called periodontal disease (more often called gum disease), the bacteria can actually enter into the bloodstream and affect the internal organs. This is why people with gum disease are also at a much higher risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, and even dementia! We’ll keep a close eye on your gums whenever you come to see us, and if we spot any redness or swelling, we have a collection of treatments designed to eliminate infection in no time.

Scaling & Root Planing

Woman receiving dental treatment

Scaling and root planing is a type of dental cleaning that is intended to accomplish two important things in the treatment of gum disease. First, the buildup of plaque and bacteria along the gum line is removed (scaling), and then any small areas around the roots of the teeth where bacteria could hide are smoothed out (root planing). This lowers the chance of reinfection and makes it easier for the gums to heal and reattach to the teeth.

Atridox Antibiotic Therapy

Atridox antibiotic kit

Gum disease bacteria primarily gather in the small spaces between the teeth and gums, and this makes it extremely hard to reach with conventional cleaning instruments. To remove this hidden bacteria, we can apply an antibiotic called Atridox directly to the gums. It will initially harden, and then slowly dissolve over the next few days, enabling it to seep deep below the gum line and reach any remaining bacteria.

PerioProtect®

PerioProtect application trays

PerioProtect® gives patients the ability to treat mild to moderate gum disease at home using an approach that is as simple as it is effective. We’ll give a patient a mouth tray that’s lined with a powerful medicine, and they just have to place the tray over their teeth for a few minutes each day. This will send the medicine directly into the gum line where it’s needed, attacking an infection at the source.

Diode Laser Decontamination

Diodelaser systme

For cases of more advanced gum disease, we can actually eliminate bacteria using our Biolase Epic X diode laser. Its highly-focused beam of light is able to kill bacteria along the gum line without actually harming the gum tissue. In fact, it emits almost no heat, sound, or vibration, meaning a patient will barely feel anything during a procedure. It’s also able to cauterize and sanitize the treatment area as it goes, meaning patients will experience little to no bleeding or swelling during or after their appointment.

Periodontal Pocket Reduction

Woman with healthy teeth and gums

Normally, your gums should fit snugly against your teeth, but when gum disease bacteria forms, it can actually cause pockets to develop between them. These are the perfect places for bacteria to thrive, and reducing them is essential to stopping gum disease long term. We can use special tools to remove bacteria from these hard-to-reach areas and then reattach the gums directly to the teeth, giving the bacteria no place to hide.
